Gregory Mayse

Gregory Mayse grew up in a small village of Castalia in northern Ohio. His interest in art started at an early age with drawing. In high school he majored in art and continued into college with a degree in graphic design. In college he was introduced to photography and that became his passion and career for the next 35 years. He owned his own photography studio and specialized in award-winning portrait, wedding, event and commercial photography. His focus changed to wildlife and nature photography in 2001 following a move to Colorado. He sold his work at juried fine art shows around the state. In his creative life, he has worked as painter, photographer, illustrator, graphic designer, writer and musician.

In 2011 Gregory decided to return to his first creative passion of oil painting. Spending many hours working from the collection of wildlife photo references, his painting skills came back to life.

Three years ago, always having an interest in the American West, Gregory decided to focus his skills on western art. He spends several weeks out of each year taking photo references at a variety of events in the west that feature authentic period clothing, gear, weapons and regalia.

His story-telling compositions done in a realistic style often reveal more to the viewer the longer that they study his pieces. Focusing on life and culture of the American West you will find cowboys, cowgirls, mountain men, Native Americans and prairie travelers.

Gregory’s work has been juried into national and regional fine art shows as well as being featured in publications. He was recently featured as one of the Colorado Artists in Southwest Art magazine. Gregory is a member of the Oil Painters of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and American Plains Artist. He serves on the Arts Committee for the 200th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail.

Gregory is the owner of Wolf River Studio in Fort Collins, Colorado.
