Gail Jones Sundell
Gail Jones Sundell takes a roughly shaped stone from the earth and brings it to life. While primarily self-directed, she was influenced by the guidance of artists who taught at her family’s art center and from the sculptors who frequented her family’s stone yard.
One of Gail’s aspirations is to depict the wonderful stories and legends of various native peoples, especially the American Indians. Their stories have such vivid imagery, and it is a joy to illustrate those stories in stone. She enjoys portraying relationships between mothers and children and men and women. She aims to create sculptures that speak to the viewer and make them want to stop and listen to the stories that the sculpture has to share. Working with alabaster and other stones is a very challenging and rewarding experience that she has enjoyed for over 50 years.
Gail has participated in the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show and Sale since 1999. Her work has received numerous awards, including the purchase award at the 2000 CFD Western Art Show. The stones she brings to life have become personal treasures of private and corporate collections all over the world. Some of these include the Governor’s Residence and State Museum in Cheyenne, the Community of Christ Temple in Independence, Missouri, and the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. She is grateful for the support of the Wyoming Community and appreciates her collectors from all around the globe.
