Gail Jones Sundell
Gail Jones Sundell transforms raw stone into expressive works of art, breathing life and story into each piece she creates. Largely self-directed, her artistic journey was shaped by the influence of accomplished artists who taught at her family’s art center, as well as by the sculptors who frequented her family’s stone yard. These early experiences fostered a deep respect for stone and its expressive potential. A central aspiration of Gail’s work is to honor and illustrate the rich stories and legends of Native peoples, particularly those of American Indian cultures. Drawn to their vivid imagery and enduring wisdom, she finds joy in translating these narratives into stone. Her sculptures often explore themes of connection and relationship—between mothers and children, and between men and women—inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and listen to the stories each piece has to tell. Working primarily in alabaster and other stones, Gail finds the sculptural process both challenging and deeply rewarding, a passion she has pursued for more than five decades. Gail has participated in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show and Sale since 1999, earning numerous honors, including a Purchase Award at the 2000 exhibition. Her sculptures are held in private and corporate collections worldwide, some of these including the Governor’s Residence and State Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming; the Community of Christ Temple in Independence, Missouri; and the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. Gail remains deeply grateful for the continued support of the Wyoming art community and for the collectors around the world who cherish her work.
